Sunstone was prized by ancient magicians, who claimed to use it to attract the strength of the sun.
It ressembles an orange opal, with a fiery, multicolored flash. The optical effect appears to be due to reflections from inclusions of red copper.
When viewed from certain directions exhibits a brilliant spangled appearance, called aventurescence.
